AHAM is an ANSI accredited Standards Development Organization. AHAM develops and maintains technical standards for various appliances to provide uniform, repeatable procedures for measuring specific product characteristics and performance features. AHAM maintains twenty five standards, many of which are approved by ANSI as American National Standards through the consensus approval process. AHAM standards also are recognized by many regulatory agencies including the U.S. Department of Energy in its appliance efficiency test procedures. Standards are adopted voluntarily by AHAM members in the public interest, to establish common understanding between manufacturers and consumers and to assist consumers in comparing appliances before purchases.
In addition to publishing standards, AHAM also provides regular information and advocacy to members before other standards development organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), ASTM International, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Standards Organization (ISO).
